Today, children are living on the streets of South Africa's cities due to a multitude of poverty related issues. Street-life can be devastating and extremely traumatic with hunger, abuse, violence, disease and exploitation ever present. South Africa hosts the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and this could present an opportunity or crisis for the street children of Durban, South Africa. Tom and Mandi Hewitt, founders of Umthombo Street Children will talk about the challenges of 2010 and the politics that surround the phenomenon of the growing number of children who call the streets their home. Umthombo is a unique organization led predominantly by former street children, it is a voice from the streets and empowers street children to leave the streets and re-integrate into their communities.
